An Automation Engineer is a key element within the Rackspace support infrastructure and are expected to provide a high level of technical support to our customers. An Automation Engineer is the owner of complex automations that enable Rackspace to better serve our customers. An Automation Engineer is expected to use initative and standard programming practices to ensure the stability and security of Rackspace,s automated solutions.

Proposes and implements system enhancements that will improve the capabilities, performance and reliability of the automations. Coordinates the order and execution of the development, upgrading, monitoring, testing and servicing the automations. Approves action requests and specifies purchase requirements. Negotiates and places orders with common carriers.

Defines, designs and implements automated solutions using the UNIX platform. Responsible for building and supporting automations for deployment, diagnostics and remidiations run on customer devices. This will include bulk and on demand solutions for end user use.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITY:

- General knowledge of servers/computer hardware and software.
- General knowledge of DNS, including diagnostics with Unix tools.

We are looking for a Linux Operations Administratorwho will be a key element within the Rackspace support infrastructure and is expected to provide a high level of technical support to our customers over the phone and via support tickets. A System Administrator is the owner of complex customer issues which may take several days or weeks to resolve. Responsibilities:

- Adds to and extends features of the OpenStack platform for provisioning and managing the life cycle of virtual machines in large scale.
- Facilitates design discussions with developers from Rackspace as well as the OpenStack community and documents own designs with blueprints.
- Actively participates in regular OpenStack meetings and contributes to discussion on the designs from the community.
- Actively provides code review feedbacks to code commits from the OpenStack community and from other Rackspace developers.
- Writes clean, maintainable code that is suitable for continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD), following best practices and guidelines from Rackspace and the OpenStack community.
- Debugs code, troubleshoots problems and develops solutions for production issues.
- Collaborates with other developers, quality engineers (QE), ops engineers and support engineers to ensure smooth deployment, continual operation and fanatical support of quality software.
- Mentors developing developers.
- Contributes to Rackspace strategy on productizing OpenStack features.

The ideal candidate will have the following:
- BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience in designing and writing cutting edge software on Linux platform. Bonus if you have worked with multiple languages like C, C++, Java, Python, or Ruby. Extra bonus if you have contributed to OpenStack!
- Solid knowledge of design patterns and object oriented software design practices.
- Good working knowledge of Internet and operating system security fundamentals.
- Good working knowledge of message queuing technologies such as RabbitMQ and ZeroMQ.

The Opportunity: Rackspace is seeking world class presales Solution Engineers (SEs) to join our Enterprise Technical Sales team. Rackspace SE serve as a technical pre-sales support resource for Rackspace sales teams and customers. SEs utilize their deep technology expertise to help design supportable, scalable technology solutions based on requirements provided by customers or prospects. SEs support Rackspace sales efforts by positioning our unique cloud, hybrid, and dedicated infrastructure solutions against those of our competitors while translating the technical merits of the solution into value for clients.

The technical demands of the SE role at Rackspace are significant. Successful candidates will possess hands-on experience with a broad variety of Enterprise computing infrastructure and cloud computing technologies.

Job Requirements

Must Have:

- 10+ years of customer facing experience in a technical consulting, systems engineer, or presales engineering role.

- A track record of success developing and deploying creative technical solutions to business problems for or within large enterprise organizations.

- Understanding of technology and industry issues that impact business units and IT organizations within large enterprise organizations.

- The ability to adapt communication style to suit audiences ranging from individual engineers and developers to senior management at the VP and C-level.

- Excellent oral and written communication skills.

- Experience designing and deploying computing infrastructure solutions that span a variety of technologies (i.e. storage, networking, compute).

- Comfortable navigating through and extracting detail from the sometimes ambiguous requirements provided by customers and prospects.

- A deep passion for technology and a love of learning new things.

- Comfort operating in a fast paced environment that’s constantly evolving and changing.

- Strong critical thinking and communication skills.

- Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering, Science, Information Technology or Business discipline.

Nice to Have:

- One or more relevant industry recognized certifications: i.e. RHCE/A, MCITP, CCNA, VSP, CISSP, ITIL foundations.

- Hands-on experience with cloud computing (IaaS or PaaS) platforms.
